Dear Meadows Parents:
Welcome to the 2007-2008 school year at Madison Meadows. The parent-teacher
organization at Meadows, Parents and Teachers at Meadows (P.T.M.), is
one of the most involved and active organizations of its kind in Arizona.
P.T.M. is extremely proud to boast twenty-four committees and forty-one
chairmen planning and organizing the many wonderful enrichment programs
from which our children will benefit.
P.T.M. meets monthly and the meeting dates are listed in the P.T.M.
Directory. P.T.M. has a full calendar of events and activities throughout
the school year. If you have not already done so, please review the committee
structure listed in the P.T.M. Directory, and find areas that tap into
your interests, talents, and schedule. The strength of our parent volunteer
organization lies in its diverse and talented membership. It is our hope
that you will work on one or more P.T.M. committees this year. We have
a multitude of jobs that can be accomplished at various times of the
day and week. P.T.M. extends well beyond the school day!
Sincerely,
Nancy Schriber, P.T.M. President
Kelly Jackson, P.T.M. Vice-President Communications
Kelli Butler, P.T.M. Vice-President Fundraising

PTM PRESS
Take me out to the ballgame, take me out to the crowds,
buy me some peanuts and crackerjacks…
Yes, it’s baseball and softball season, the time of year that is
spent taxiing the troops from school, to
practice, to games. This is also the time of year I start justifying
the nutritional benefits of sunflower
seeds and cheese popcorn from the snack shack as we all eat on the run!
NOT ANYMORE! Our
Snack Shack Queens, Barb Cunningham and Bonnie Rivera have the snack
shack stocked with
the usual great kid snacks along with teriyaki chicken bowls, pizza every
night, homemade dinners
on Fridays and much, much more! They are still selling the $10 pre-paid
snack shack punch cards
that alleviate the parent need to always have change available to hand
out for food and drinks.
Please support our snack shack and thank Barb and Bonnie while your there
for all their hard work!
We’ve got spirit, yes we do! We’ve
got spirit how about you! On Friday, April 25th the Meadows community
will have a chance to come show their spirit as the Meadows teachers
will be taking on a team of students in a softball game! The students will be selected in a lottery in their homeroom classes.
The softball game will begin at 3:30 PM. The book fair will also be open in
the Media Center during the game and the snack shack will be selling a
hotdog, chip and drink combo for $3 as well as their other yummy snacks.
There will also be raffle tickets for sale for some cool prizes! Come show
your spirit and watch some competitive softball, browse the book fair and have dinner! We look forward to seeing ALL OF YOU there!
Speaking of school spirit, Kendra Tollackson, our book fair chair, has
been working hard to make
this year’s Book Fair a homerun success! She invites you all to
come to the book fair, which will open on SATURDAY MORNING, APRIL
19, from 9:00 - 11:00 A.M. and AGAIN from 5:00 P.M. - 8:00 P.M. THE BOOK
FAIR WILL THEN BE OPEN every day the week of April 21-25 during
the lunch hour and FOR ONE HOUR after school (INCLUDING OUR EARLY
RELEASE DAY, ON Wed. April 23rd). It will also be open the evening of Thursday, April 24th from 6-8 PM
and FRIDAY
EVENING, APRIL 25, DURING OUR FACULTY/STUDENT BALL GAME and
FESTIVITIES. Make a point of stopping by sometime that week!
There will be books available for all ages, including adult as well as
teacher “wish list” books. These
books have been selected by the teachers and can be purchased as a donation
for the classroom.
As always we would like to thank the wonderful Med-O-Gram distribution
crew of Jacquie Kurth for
being such a great Meadows team player, each and every time we need the
Med-O-Gram distributed.
ATTENTION 7TH GRADE PARENTS!! Eighth
Grade Commencement is fast approaching and each year we ask the
7th Grade parents to help out with the events so that the 8th
Grade parents can enjoy this time with their graduates and families.
Commencement is Thursday, May 29th at 6:30 PM at Central High School. Volunteers are needed to be at Central High School by 5:45 PM
to pass
out programs and help with refreshments after the ceremony. We are also
in need of parents to chaperone at the dance to be held in Meadows
cafeteria from 8:30-
10:30 PM following the commencement ceremony. Chaperoning the dance is "fun" to
do as a couple, you can dance and we need men to help keep the
chaos to a minimum! Chaperones need to be in the Meadows cafeteria at 8:00 PM.
Please step up to help us
this year so that you can enjoy your time next year! Marianne
Ross is the parent volunteer coordinator for the committee, please contact her to volunteer at 602.997.4665 or email
at nross4@cox.net.

The Meadows and Simis Odyssey of the Mind teams
hit a homerun at the state competition on April 5th. The fifth
grade team, coached by Lisa Kaplan, took second place in "The Eccentrics" problem.
The team's skit, which involved a problem with an earth system that had
to be solved by three eccentric characters, who in turn launch
a new fad, received the highest score in their problem category.
Overall, they took second place, and are moving on to World Finals at
the University of Maryland from May 31-June 3. The fifth grade
team coached by Ms. Cohen placed fourth in the "Road Rally" problem.
They built a car, designed to look like a horse, which completed multiple sports tasks. Very cool! The kids all were fantastic, and we
should be proud of all of them!
Simis teams did great as well. The 3rd and 4th grade team will move on
to World and the 2nd grade
team took 4th place. WAY TO GO!
We will be having fundraisers to help defray the cost of the trip to
the University of Maryland. Please
consider making a tax credit donation marked for Odyssey of the Mind!
Please see Mrs. Lynn or
Mrs. Grosso in the office if you have questions.
The Odyssey of the Mind teams from both Simis and Meadows would like
to thank Vic
Lowery of the UPS store at 16th St. and Glendale for donating the packaging
services of the
OM sets to Maryland for the World Competition! This is the second year
the UPS store has
made this donation. Not only does this help immensely with costs but
also the time and energy
needed to ship the sets is huge! Thank You Vic and the UPS Store!
The Cookie Dough sale was a success! We raised
$5,000 from the cookie dough sale. Look for new trees and some “sprucing
up” to be done
in the back of the school outside of the gymnasium and by the fields. Our dollars raised are hard
at work!
Thanks to Kelli Butler, Marianne Friedman, Beth Hill, Kelly Jackson,
Stacey Parker and Susan Solliday for their help with cookie dough distribution.
Lisa Bentley, 2008 Fall Fundraiser chair, is already hard at work putting
together her “line-up” of
volunteers. She is looking for 5th, 6th and 7th grade parents to fill
a few of her open slots for the
magazine sale promotion that kicks of August 20th. If you are interested
in helping out, contact Lisa at 602.540.3611 or email her at lisab3@cox.net.

We are still looking for several enthusiastic parents
to “step
up to the plate” and volunteer to take on a committee chair
position in the PTM. Getting involved in your child’s education
is extremely worthwhile and rewarding. Will you consider a position?!
If so, please call Kelli Butler at 602.285.1417. It takes a lot of players to make a strong team - Join
us!

CAN YOU HELP??
If you are interested in a position as a Meadows Crossing Guard, Madison

CAFETERIA NEWS
A Message from the District Office
REMINDER:
If you wish to reapply for free/reduced meals for this school year (2007/08),
a new PINK APPLICATION needs to
be filled out and returned to the school food service cashier. Applications
are in the school office or cafeteria. After October 1, please either
have your child bring a sack lunch or send a $1.00 for breakfast (No
charge for Breakfast for Camelview and Park) and $1.75 for lunch ($2.00
for No. 1 and Meadows students).
When sending money with your child to be deposited in their lunch account,
please indicate on an envelope that it is to be deposited into their
account. We have had some confusion this year. If for example a child
on reduced lunches comes through the line and hands the cashier $2.00
(which would be the amount for a 5 day reduced lunch) as they are going
through the lunch line, the cashier does not know this child is on reduced
lunches and assumes the $2.00 is for a one day lunch.
Kristin Soulsby, Director of Food and Nutrition
A Message from the Madison Meadows Cafeteria:
We are unable to warm food from home in our microwave. It is in violation
of Health Codes. Please send your student’s lunch in hot or cold
lunch packs that are so widely available.
Thank you,
Linda G.
