MEADOWS' PHYSICAL
EDUCATION DEPARTMENT
Our mission is to provide a balanced quality
program which integrates physical skills, social development and fitness
opportunities that encourage
active healthy lifestyles.
Physical education helps students develop the knowledge, fitness levels,
motor skills, and personal and social skills to obtain the ultimate
goal of a lifetime of physical activity and health. All children
at Madison
Meadows have the option to participate in a quality physical education
program. (Other than Grade 5 as it is required by district curriculum.)
Our physical education program includes curriculum aligned with the
State of Arizona with an opportunity for all to learn.
Our goal is to teach children the importance of fitness and involve
them in regular, vigorous activity.
Our purpose is for students to learn to appreciate movement
as an active and joyful experience.
Madison Meadows P.E. Program Outcomes

Two areas of special emphasis are “Safety” and “Fitness.”
5TH THROUGH 8TH
GRADE

The Madison Meadows P.E. department
believes that each student should be exposed to a healthful lifestyle
that includes consistent exercise,
proper diet, and healthy habits. The focus in Meadows' physical education
program is on introducing sports' skills and basic game play for all
major sports. Cooperative skills, sportsmanship and teamwork are also
emphasized. Each lesson is comprised so that motor skills as well as
cognitive skills are enhanced. Becoming a life long learner in physical
education is our main goal. The students focus on skill development
with activities in partnerships and in games with small groups that
allow everyone to participate. Skill development is measured through
continued observation. It is an important department objective to allow
every student to develop at his or her own pace. We encourage each
individual to achieve at his/her own potential. The department stresses
non-competitive behavior and sportsmanship throughout skill development.
Encouragement and support among the students is a priority throughout
the curriculum. Sportsmanship is also an integral part of the P.E.
curriculum. With the ability to work with each other, students can
have an excellent experience in class.
ADVANCED PHYSICAL EDUCATION (Grades 7 & 8 Electives)

This class is an elective for 7th and 8th grade students. It includes an introduction
and further development of applied fitness skills. Each student is responsible
for improving his/her own basic knowledge of activities.
Respect is highlighted throughout the curriculum during games
and activities, with a focus on how to respect each other's space and ownership
during class.
Cooperation is another fundamental skill that is used daily
in class. The students cooperate regularly through sharing equipment and participating
in activities.
Appreciation for others is another important part of the curriculum.
Appreciation for students developing an understanding of others' strengths and
weaknesses.
It is important to remind the students in our P.E. classes to not be competitive
with their strengths and to continually encourage each other to put forth the
best effort to improve weaknesses. Fair play is another integral
aspect of sportsmanship. The department teaches the students how to follow rules
and understand the importance
of fair play. Students will be required to maintain a fitness/nutrition journal.
This non-competitive elective class is fitness, nutrition, and weightlifting-skills
oriented.
