Sports Corner

Throughout the 2007-2008 School Year watch this area of the website for all the latest information on the various Madison Meadows Varsity and Junior Varsity Sport Teams.

May 23, 2008

As our 2007/2008 sports year comes to a close let’s review our accomplishments:

Fall 2007:
Our volleyball teams had extraordinarily successful seasons. Both the Varsity and JV teams won our
Conference Championships and our Varsity team repeated as the Arizona State Champs. I will never forget our second match against All Saints, down 23 to 17, after losing the first match; we rallied for eight straight points and a win. The third game was tied at 17 and another eight straight points brought the State Championship.
Our soccer teams also were very successful. The boys team, under the very capable coaching of Mr. Tod
Hammon and Mr. John Clark, won 5 games in our extremely competitive conference. Our girls, led by Coach
Yukon Tomasato, went deep into the playoffs.
In Cross Country, Laura Orlie led a very strong team to third place in the conference. Laura won the conference 2.1 mile race by a whooping 35 minutes.

Winter 2007/2008:
In the winter sport season, all of our basketball teams posted winning records. The varsity team, under the
very capable leadership of Mr. David Tall, had a very successful run in both the conference and state tournament.
Our cheer squads worked hard and finished a very respectable 3rd place in the first Valley Athletic
Conference Cheer Competition. A huge thanks to Erin Hesch and Melinda Hawkins for preparing our girls not only for the conference cheer-off, but for all of our home games and pep rally.
The second wrestling season continued to develop a fine nucleus of grapplers. Under the close supervision
of Mr. Waed Rebaedi and Mr. Dennis Fose, the squad participated in 7 meets, and these are mostly all day affairs, on Saturdays, and they fared very well. Four individual conference champions and 2 runners-up bode well for this team. The winter also brought our first ever flag-football team. Mr. Joe Skeens worked with this very young team and even won a few games. Next year will be better.

Spring 2008:
The spring sport season saw our two softball and baseball teams compete at a very high level. Our Varsity teams had a great season and would have been almost perfect, had it not been for Madison #1. Losses to #1
marred an otherwise super season, and my hat is off to Varsity softball coaches, Lynn Ziolko and Mr. Jim
Mitchell, and our boys Varsity Coach, Mr. Zach Winter.
Our JV teams were undefeated heading into the conference playoffs and fell just short of winning the
conference championship. Huge thanks are in order for coaches, Ms. Melissa Hauser and Mr. Zach Zipser.
Probably the Meadows team with the most participation and spirit was our boys and girls track team. With
over 60 participants, this team practiced mightily and really showed their mettle during meets. The boys
team, led by Jack Welty and Fred Orlie and the girls team, led by Laura Orlie and Kelley Kemp were absolutely outstanding. Four first place medals in the conference championship, 2 for Kelley and 2 for Laura, and three gold medals in the state meet, 2 for Laura and 1 for Kelley, including a state record in 800 meter run by Laura Orlie, were the most ever received by a Meadows Team. Coaches Ernie Davis and Carlton Johnson did an absolutely incredible job with this team.
No review could be complete without thanking our very supportive parents, our very generous PTM, and our administration, and most of all our students. Over 290 students participated in our program this year, they participated in over 180 games, matches and competitions, and they competed fairly and exhibited great
sportsmanship.
Thank you all for a great year,
Mr. Pazak

Congratulations to our Girl Scout Troop 1704

On 4/26/08, Troop 1704 (Emily Campagnolo, Kyley Schultz, Sophie Pallissard, Christina Boyle,
Bryanna Metz) completed their Junior Girl Scout Bronze Award project entitled “Graffiti Busters”.
This was coordinated through the Graffiti Busters City Program. We started out at 8:30 am, we
painted over seven graffiti walls/bus stop covers in the North High School area. Our work ended at
3:30 pm, we were exhausted, sun exposed and major league hungry/thirsty. The girls really did an
excellent job, the walls we painted over looked professionally done. People in the neighborhood
stopped, thanked us, and applauded, bus drivers going by beeped their horns, a Brownie girl scout
troop stopped by to see what we were doing and learn from us... All in all, it was an OUTSTANDING
and exhausting service project for our girls (all 5th graders at Madison Meadows Middle School).
Attached is a picture.

The Native American Parent Committee would like to extend a heartfelt “Thank You” to everyone who volunteered, donated or participated in the Fry Bread stand and Pow Wow. It was a lot of hard work, a
lot of fun and was a great success. We could not have done it without the motivation and help everyone put in. Thank you.
